ORRJHS Aviators' Club

The Aviators' Club is an after school class where students can learn and experience first hand, many aspects of aviation.  We cover the Alpha Bravo Charlie's of what makes an airplane fly, as well as related subjects like weather, chart reading and G-forces.  Students are also learning how to build an actual piece of an aluminum aileron. (this part of the airplane is located on the outer ends of the wings and help it to control roll)

The aileron kits were provided to the class by a gracious donation from Van's Aircraft and some of the tools used in the shop were also donated by Avery Tools .

Some of the students have also experienced what it's like to actually fly a small airplane in flight through the Young Eagles program.  The EAA Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 8 - 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers.

SHOP PROJECT

In the shop portion of the class, students learn how to safely use many of the tools and procedures required in building aluminum structures for todays aircraft. Drilling, deburing, dimpling, assembly and different types of riveting are all skills they are learning during the after school class.

PROJECT VISIT

Members of the Aviators Club were able to visit and experience first hand, an actual airplane project being built by club volunteer Dave Rogers.  The airplane you see in the photos is an RV-8.  Once finished, it will be capable of flying at 220 mph and will be capable of aerobatic maneuvers up to +6/-4 Gs.  It is built from a high quality CNC machined aluminum kit that uses some of the same parts/processes as the kits provided to the students in there club project.

YOUNG EAGLES !

Some of the students from ORRJHS' Aviators Club became Young Eagles on a recent event put on by Volunteers Dave R. in his RV-4 and Jack R. in his RV-9A.

Students and parents gathered at the New Bedford Regional Airport for the event. Each participant first learned how to pre-flight an aircraft with the pilot and then they strapped in and went for a ride !

Everyone who flew really enjoyed the experience of what it was like to fly.
